An attempted mass shooting ended with no innocent bystanders injured all thanks to a law-abiding Uber driver with a gun, in Chicago of all places!
An armed man began shooting into a crowd of people at Logan Square in Chicago late Friday night. After witnessing everything from his vehicle, an Uber driver with a concealed carry permit immediately responded to what could have been a horrible incident by pulling his own weapon and firing six shots at the gunman.
The gunman was later identified as 22-year-old Everardo Custodio, who is currently being treated for gunshot wounds to the thigh, shin, and lower back at Advocate Illinois Masonic hospital.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the Uber driver was in a parked car nearby when he witnessed Custodio shooting into a crowd of pedestrians at the 2900 block of North Milwaukee Avenue. The driver, who has only been identified as a 47-year-old male from Little Italy, fired six shots at the gunman and remained at the scene until police arrived. He immediately presented his valid concealed carry permit and firearms owner’s identification card.
When first-time gun owners finally get their concealed carry license, there are some avoidable mistakes made along the way.
You have purchased your gun, you’ve taken your required courses, and you’re now on your way to carrying concealed. This is an exciting step for every gun owner, and a very important one.
However, first-time carriers sometimes make mistakes that are easily avoidable. Instead of learning the hard way, check out some tips to help you be even more responsible and prepared.
Many of us recall the story of Shaneen Allen– the mother of two who was pulled over in New Jersey for an ‘unsafe lane change’ and ended up landing 10 years in prison. Why? Because she gave the officer her concealed carry permit and honestly informed him that she was armed.
Less of you may recall that recently an unarmed man from Florida was driving through Maryland and was pulled over. After the cops retrieved his driver’s license and registration, they returned to the vehicle and immediately began to harass him about where his gun was located.
As a response to these types of incidents where states refuse to recognize other states’ concealed carry laws (even to those just passing through), a Senate Republican introduced the ‘reciprocity bill‘ that would potentially enforce that every state is to recognize a traveler’s concealed carry permit. This hopefully would protect out-of-state travelers from facing a criminal charge that they were unaware of to begin with.
Virginia, however, is taking a completely different approach. Instead of trying to enforce other states to ‘reciprocate’ concealed carry permits in a state that doesn’t allow it, Virginia is introducing a bill that would deny out-of-state officers from accessing residents’ concealed carry data entirely.
Virginia SB948 states that “the proposed legislation provides that information on concealed handgun
permitees in the Virginia Criminal Information Network may not be shared with law
enforcement in states that do not have reciprocity agreements with Virginia for the carrying
of concealed handguns.”
More specifically, this would help to protect Virginia residents from facing punishment from restrictive governments such as those in surrounding states; i.e. Washington D.C and Maryland. Speaking from my own personal fears, I am legitimately afraid to go anywhere near I-395 N or 66 when my gun is with me because I could immediately face criminal charges just by missing an exit and ending up in DC or Maryland, even though I am legally permitted to have my gun with me less than 1 mile away.
With this bill, Virginia is one step away from blocking off their state’s concealed carry permit database from law enforcement from states who do not have the reciprocity act in place.
A customer at a bar in Houston ignored open carry laws. Luckily for those around him, he shot and killed 2 of 4 armed robbers.
According to KHOU:
Just after closing around 2:30 Saturday morning, four armed men barged in at EJ’s Place demanding money.
Instead, a customer inside the bar, which is located on the 16500 block of Kuykendahl Road, pulled out his gun and started exchanging fire with the robbers. He shot and killed two of them while the other two ran. Once the heated exchange ended, the patron left, too.
“We’re still trying to determine who he is, and why he left the scene,” said Harris County Sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Spurgeon.
At the moment it is still illegal for citizens to carry a gun into a bar, which is most likely why the patron fled the scene. Regardless of the local and state laws, most believe that this man had every right to defend himself and the people in that bar.
This is a prime example of why ‘gun free zones’ don’t make you safe. It is just a false hope that can actually put you into harms way because criminals aren’t expecting anyone to be able to defend themselves. That is precisely why the other 2 robbers ran away. They don’t want to die, which is why allowing law-abiding citizens to carry actually protects you and your loved ones.
If criminals don’t know whether or not someone is carrying a gun, it gives them fear. Fear leads to hesitation and reconsideration. When criminals are afraid to rob/steal/rape/kill, that is when there will be less crime.
Well, I guess the good guy with a gun is at it again! I wonder what Shannon Watts has to say now..

I guess my constant Google searches and endless hours of looking at guns for sale has finally caught up to me. I am getting emails, tweets, phone calls, and Pinterest links sent to me with “Girly Guns”.
I have to say I have some mixed feelings about the bedazzled and painted guns that seem to only target female gun owners on the web and in stores. Because of these feelings, I have tried to think of why I like and dislike the idea of having a pink gun or something covered in rhinestones. I have also tried to look into why it is women are interested in these designs.
I believe that a lot of women (not all) search for guns that look ‘less scary’. Picking up a small pink gun the size of your hand almost doesn’t register in your brain that you are holding a deadly weapon. Which makes me wonder- if you aren’t recognizing it as a dangerous weapon, would your attacker? This is one of the reasons that I have a bit of hesitation in purchasing a decorated gun. I don’t ever want to give my attacker any indication that I am not serious about defending myself or that my weapon is “too girly” to do any harm to a man, even if that isn’t true.
The next reason I think that women flock to these guns is because they are more ‘fashionable’ or ‘pretty’. To me, a gun is not something you sport around on your hip just to look good or feel pretty. Carrying a gun is serious business and needs to be treated like such. The other thing that I am confused about is a lot of these guns are meant for concealed carry. If you are meaning to keep it hidden from someone, then why choose a weapon designed to stick out? Now some women wear a TON of pink. In that case, I guess a pink concealed carry gun is probably a good choice. In the case that you are trying to hide in a dark corner somewhere, I have some concerns that a bright colored or bedazzled gun may give away my position if light catches it.
Another reason women lean towards this purchase is because it shows men that “this isn’t my husbands gun, it’s mine”. I have talked to a lot of women who feel empowered by having a gun that is unmistakably their’s. Heck, more power to them.
Let me dig a little deeper here. It’s not the little pink and black handguns that really bother me. It is more the “My Little Pony” and the “Hello Kitty” guns that I can’t stand.
Another issue I have with these is they look like toys. If something looks like a toy, it is pretty much assumed that it will be treated like a toy. If not by you, then possibly by a child. That being said, if not taught by their parents, any child could pick up a gun thinking it’s a toy.
Now to my biggest issue. I think that the way pink guns are being marketed towards women is a bit ridiculous, and quite frankly I think that is the main reason they bother me. It’s as if some believe women are only attracted to the style and color of the weapon and not to the fact that it’s a firearm. There has been one occasion where I was looking at a gun and was encouraged to go with the pink gun instead of a black one. To me, I felt like the man thought that I knew nothing about guns and would want that one just because it’s ‘pretty’. I then asked him “why this one over that one?” while pointing at the PX4 I had been wanting. He starred at me for a couple of seconds and then said “well because this one is popular with our female customers”. Wrong answer dude. Someone once phrased it “It’s as if I was looking at a car and the salesmen shows me the vanity mirror with pretty lights when I was about to ask a question about the engine”. That is exactly how I felt. I mean seriously now, guys do you have this problem? I don’t think so.
Finally, I feel like a lot of the negativity that goes towards pink guns is one of the main reasons that I haven’t considered purchasing one. Why do a lot of the guys tend to laugh at the women who walk into a range with an ‘unmanly gun’? I surely don’t want to fall into this stereotype that women are weak and can’t own a ‘real’ gun. On the other hand, how would it make these guys feel having this pink gun wind up in the evidence tray for their case after getting shot? Yea.. I don’t think they’d feel too good about that one.
All in all, I have come to the conclusion that it’s just a color. It by no means determines whether or not a woman is weak. It by no means takes away from the damage that the gun can do. Heck, it’s a ‘man’ gun with a coat of paint on top of it. Now will I ever purchase a pink gun? Probably not. Pink isn’t really my thing. But will I NEVER buy any colored gun? I wouldn’t go that far. This Tiffany Blue rifle is pretty cool 🙂
Well, that sure took long.
After a long day of countless #BurritosNotBullets Twitter posts, Chipotle has come out to say that they will now ask customers not to bring their firearms into their restaurants. Read their full statement here.
Recently participants from an “open carry” demonstration in Texas brought guns (including military-style assault rifles) into one of our restaurants, causing many of our customers anxiety and discomfort. Because of this, we are respectfully asking that customers not bring guns into our restaurants, unless they are authorized law enforcement personnel.
Historically, we felt it enough to simply comply with local laws regarding the open or concealed carrying of firearms, because we believe that it is not fair to put our team members in the uncomfortable position of asking that customers refrain from bringing guns into our restaurants. However, because the display of firearms in our restaurants has now created an environment that is potentially intimidating or uncomfortable for many of our customers, we think it is time to make this request.
In a statement earlier today, the company said that “the display of firearms in our restaurants has now created an environment that is potentially intimidating or uncomfortable for many of our customers”. Originally, Chipotle did not ask the gun rights advocates to leave after bringing their “assault rifles” into the restaurant because they were following local laws regarding open and concealed carry. There’s that word again! Assault rifles. Good grief.
I found this information after scrolling through my Facebook feed about an hour a go. This comment made me chuckle.
Ok, explain this to me. Why would you call them a ‘dangerous jerk’ and end your sentence with “what are you going to do, shoot me?” As if to imply that you don’t feel threatened. So why is someone dangerous if you don’t feel threatened by them? Why is someone a jerk for exercising their right to own a gun? Is it because they followed LOCAL laws and Chipotle didn’t kick them out? Really, that makes someone a jerk?
Anyways, so after a bunch of anti-gun nuts harass Chipotle via social media, the company buckles at the knees and boom. Guns are no longer allowed. Here are a couple of Tweets from this morning that had Chipotle so scared of losing customers.
There’s that word yet again. It’s not an assault rifle or a ‘military style assault rifle’ as stated in ABC’s recent article. They were carrying semi-automatic rifles. There’s a difference, look it up.
All in all, I think a lot of people over-reacted. No one was hurt or shot at. You had law-abiding citizens that decided to eat at a restaurant after participating in a pro-gun rally. If you ask me, this goes to show that these citizens aren’t the danger here.
Sadly, they all whined on Twitter and Facebook and got their way.
Yup. You heard it right! Democrats are now asking Obama to designate $10 million towards researching gun violence. Nevermind that our country is already trillions of dollars in debt! What’s another $10 million to conduct research that we already have conducted?
It takes almost nothing to access FBI local and state databases and run comparisons. This has already been done but information was tossed aside like a piece of trash because it didn’t line up with their argument. Do you think that if the objective research convinces them that guns protect more than harm that Democrats will all of a sudden agree and get off this frustrating gun control kick? Absolutely not. This money isn’t to do “research”, it’s to advance a long standing discrimination campaign of lies against gun owners and produce biased information because they are searching so desperately for the credibility they need to ban guns. For them this is about control and nothing more. Want further proof? Do you honestly think that if a gun control supporter’s family was in real danger, that they would yell to the cop “No! Put that gun away! You’ll hurt somebody!”? I’m 100% positive that in a life threatening situation, you wouldn’t hear an argument in favor of control from them.
The scariest part of this is, Obama is the puppeteer for all of his little puppets. He says dance, they dance. He says “guns are bad!” and they all jump ahead to fight this battle for him. He doesn’t want to look like the bad guy here. He wants you and everyone else to think that he has your best interest at heart. If that’s true and he thinks guns are so horrible then why is he surrounded by armed forces every second of every day? If your safety is truly his concern, why is he freeing murderers from prison at an unprecedented level due to “overcrowding” instead of releasing more non-violent criminals instead? It is because he has an agenda. What do you think Obama will do first once these criminals that HE RELEASED starts harming someone? He is going to yell “See!? We told you. Gun crime is increasing, we need to disarm the public.”
DR.Gary Kleck, Criminologist, at the University of Florida, shared his Government funded research to show that firearms are used for self defense over 2 million times a year. Just imagine what the homicide rate would increase to if those people and future families didn’t/won’t have a gun to protect themselves. What’s you next step then Obama?
Guns used in self-defense are by Americans who have a LEGAL right to carry with a LEGAL license or permit. Guns used for violence are by criminals with an ILLEGAL right (most likely because they failed a background check) with ILLEGAL guns (stolen, unregistered, and foreign) who shoot UNARMED innocent people. Hmm. So let me get this straight. Obama wants to disarm Americans who are using their guns in a legal fashion yet he won’t do anything about controlling the border to stop foreign criminals from invading America and using their illegal guns to do so? Do you honestly not see a problem with that?
If he really cared about the safety of US citizens, he would start by putting this $10 million dollars towards border control and getting criminals off the streets.
Don’t think criminals are the only problem? Really? That’s interesting. All it takes is to look at cities and states that have banned guns. Look at Illinois (mainly Chicago and East St. Luis, which by the way is #1 on the most dangerous cities in the US in 2013 list), Massachusetts, and Michigan in cities like Detroit, Saganaw, and Fint (all list in the top 10 most dangerous cities in the US). You already know how dangerous Chicago and Detroit are. You hear shootings on the news on a weekly basis. So let’s look a little into Massachusetts shall we? MA banned all guns in 1998. Legal gun ownership has dropped from 1.5 million to less than 200,000. This resulted in 300% higher crime rate and 200% more hospital visits due to gun related injuries. Can you imagine what this would do to an entire country? Anyone who thinks that Obama doesn’t realize this either thinks he is an idiot or is an idiot themselves. So what is his agenda?
Let me give you an example. Let’s say there is a neighborhood street with 2 houses. For the sake of an argument, we’ll say they are both nice houses with expensive things. Both have children and beautiful wives. One house has a man outside cleaning his guns on the front law once a week when he gets back from a hunting trip. The other is an anti-gun activist who likes to display signs in their yard that guns should be banned. If a killer/robber/rapist walks up to this street, which house do you think he’ll go to? The one that doesn’t threaten him because they are unarmed or the one who has an armed man who knows his way around guns? YOU and your family are being put at a disadvantage by not owning a gun. Once killers/robbers/rapists know that no one has guns, what’s stopping them from committing MORE crime?
Switzerland is a country that has the LOWEST crime rate in the entire world. Why? Several reasons. One being that the vast majority of men between the ages of 20-30 had to undergo military training, including weapons training. Another reason is that Switzerland has one of the highest gun ownership rates in the world with 45.7 out of every 100 citizens owns a gun legally. But noooo, the fact that they have the lowest crime rate in the WORLD is just a coincidence.
Wake up America. You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again. When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. Disarming Americans will lead to MORE gun violence, not less.
Stop asking questions like:
“Who will conduct this research?”
“Where is the money coming from?”
And start asking WHY Obama is so eager to disarm us and in a way that turns Americans on each other instead of on him.
